S.T.A.L.K.E.R. : Shadow of Chernobyl is generally regarded as one of the genre’s first pioneers. SoC is a must-have for aficionados of the genre due to its praised eerie post-apocalyptic atmosphere and intense shooting mechanics.
Given that S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 will be released in 2021, now is the ideal moment to rediscover this classic. Or, if you’ve never played, try it out for the first time (with modifications, of course) to see what all the fuss is about. Fortuitously, there are a plethora of modifications available, from strengthening what the game currently offers to providing us with an entirely new SoC experience.
If you’re planning to play Call of Pripyat in the near future, here are some of the better modifications you may want to check out.
Visually, Call of Pripyat was not the worst of its day. Given that it has been more than a decade since its release, the game’s visuals do reveal its age. This Remake mod is one of several efforts to improve the game’s visuals, and it does an excellent job.
It contains Ultra HD textures for character models, opponent models, weapons, and other objects. In addition to the enhancements made to the weather system, architecture, and visual effects, the environment’s textures have also been improved.
A frequent criticism of the Remake mod is that it departs significantly from the dismal tone of the original. If this is something that may disturb you, then the following mod on our list may be more in line with your preferences.
2) Radiophobia 3
Radiophobia 3 is a mod for Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl that emphasises realism and extreme difficulty. The modification does this by making the game more difficult by altering the economy and making ammunition and supplies scarce and difficult to get.
Radiophobia makes the game more difficult by introducing a complete AF3 blowout system and enhanced AI. Radiophobia contains an extensive arsenal of weaponry, explosions, and more.
3) Call of Pripyat Complete
Call of Pripyat Complete is one of the first and most well-known huge S.T.A.L.K.E.R. modifications ever created. Since Shadow of Chernobyl, the crew behind Call of Pripyat Complete has been actively involved in the modding community. Therefore, they have contributed their own enhancements to the series from the very beginning.
The purpose of these modifications is to deliver an enhanced experience across the whole game, including improvements to visuals, AI, audio, bug fixes, and even unique gameplay elements to make S.T.A.L.K.E.R. play more like… well, more as these modders picture it. It is totally worth a go to see how you feel about the improvements, even though you may not like it.
4) Stalker Complete 2009
Stalker Complete 2009 is a modification that does not alter the original plot of Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. The mod’s primary objective is to deliver the most reliable and immersive experience for the base game. Because of this, we advise getting Stalker Complete 2009 if you like a reliable yet visually enhanced vanilla experience.
5) Shoker Weapon Mod
If you’re searching for something a little more broad in terms of weaponry in CoP, the Shoker Weapon Mod is another excellent alternative. The mod not only upgrades the game’s current weaponry, but also offers new aspects to explore.
In addition, the Shoker Weapon Mod adds some intriguing new weapon attachments, which make each weapon seem really distinct. Not to mention the addition of new gunshot noises.
6) Old Good Stalker Evolution
Old Good Stalker Evolution is a fantastic mod if you’re seeking for a new experience that is faithful to the original Stalker experience. Old Good Stalker offers a large number of extra missions that alter and enrich the basic plot of Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl.
The Old Good Stalker mod also includes new missions, weaponry, and other additional features, such as weapon attachments that are replaceable. In addition to finding new vehicles, players will also discover a more dynamic atmosphere with NPC Stalkers roaming the Zone.
7) Spatial Anomaly
Another major mod on our list, Spatial Anomaly is an excellent choice for expanding the game’s main content. The mod follows a whole new narrative, focusing on the legendary mercenary dubbed Beast.
You will be able to experience his struggle for existence in a strange location known only as the “spatial anomaly,” where supplies are sparse and survival is difficult. The mod adds many new explorable places, including several from prior S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.
Stalkersoup was initially a huge mod for Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl that gamers could download and install. Stalkersoup is now a standalone game that contains the original Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl.
However, Stalkersoup adds an absurd amount of information to Stalker, which conceptually encompasses everything including the kitchen sink. In reality, there are much too many things to mention here, so here is a brief overview of everything Stalkersoup offers.
When it comes to atmosphere and immersion, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is one of the greatest. But supposing you want to go even further?
Since the default S.T.A.L.K.E.R. HUD isn’t exactly the finest, minimalist HUDs are a typical method for increasing immersion. The M.E.H.U.D. Mod facilitates this.
It gives a streamlined version of the game’s HUD, maintaining all the crucial information you’ll need during the game. There’s also an option to eliminate the minimap if you’re searching for a more challenging experience.
10) Starter Pack
The modding community has created a “Starter Pack” for individuals who are new to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. modifications. As you may have predicted, it is a wonderful starting point since it does not alter the gameplay in any way. You would still get the original SoC experience, but with new visuals.
In addition to many cosmetic modifications, the Starter Pack contains the Zone Reclamation Project. ZRP is a community-supported modpack for general bugfixes, so count yourself fortunate if this is your first time playing the game.
11) Arsenal Overhaul 3
Exploring new weaponry is usually a fascinating aspect of any shooter. Arsenal Overhaul 3 is highly recommended if you want new weaponry.
The mod adds nearly one hundred new guns, as well as 28 new kinds of ammunition and six new suits. Additionally, the mod has previously been tested for compatibility with other popular modifications such as Atmosfear 3 and Absolute Nature 3.
12) Original Weapons Renewal 3
Even weaponry are being redesigned for the SoC. The weapon textures from Call of Pripyat have been directly transferred for SoC compatibility, and you’d be shocked at how far graphics technology has come in the last several years.
The weapon textures are all in high definition, but that is not the only improvement this patch provides. Movement-based weapon animations have been included for sprinting and other motions. Updated weapon sounds, including reloading and firing, have also been included.
13) Gunslinger Mod
Regarding weapon upgrades, the Gunslinger Mod is by far the most popular choice in CoP. This mod enhances the overall realism of the game’s movement by introducing a variety of adjustments. All weapons have been redesigned with new models, reload animations, and sound effects for a more engaging experience.
The mod’s designers even went so far as to incorporate unique animations for almost every action in the game. The addition of bespoke animations for opening medication, eating, drinking, and even applying bandages brings the game’s realism to a whole new level.
14) Weather Total Conversion Mod 3
Immersion in video games is often affected by inconspicuous elements. Even weather effects have been improved since SoC’s debut, as the community has taken it upon themselves to make the game appear as nice as possible.
New shaders and textures have been used to give the weather a more realistic appearance. Various weather effects have also been included, such as dawn and sunset effects with many stages and new weather cycles. This modification utilises 120 new skydome textures to provide the most realistic weather imaginable.
15) AtmosFear for Pripyat
AtmosFear is one of the most commonly mentioned “must-have” modifications for Call of Pripyat. Due to the seamless integration of the additions with the main game’s ambiance, a large number of fans consider it vital. AtmostFear focuses on upgrading the game’s weather mechanisms to give it a more realistic feel, providing seven dynamic weather cycles.
Absolute Nature is a downloadable add-on for the mod that focuses on upgrading environmental graphics such as plants, trees, and water. Overall, AtmosFear and Absolute Nature are definitely the optimal graphic settings for this game. Especially if you are seeking modernised graphics.
16) Real Gore
Obviously, blood and gore are inherent components of shooter games. The Real Gore mod by Hades not only increases the quantity of blood in the game, but also enhances its visuals.
The blood colour has been rendered more realistic, and there are now “wet” blood markings and bits of gore in the blood from exit wounds. This not only gives the game a more realistic appearance, but also makes fatalities far more terrible.
17) Hal’s Traders Overhauled (HTO)
17) Hal’s Traders Overhauled (HTO)
Many SoC fans believed that the trade system was one of the game’s most significant enhancements. The revamped Hal’s Traders adds more complexity and realism to trading, making each trader distinct.
He didn’t like how, in the original game, merchants would constantly offer you meaningless stuff while you were already armed with better alternatives; this was the first thing he changed.
Additionally, merchants have increased their stocks, making it simpler to obtain ammunition. Additionally, there is increased diversity among the merchants, since various merchants will likely not sell identical products.
